Buttevant advance to North Cork Football Semi-Final   22/07/2017

Buttevant 2-15 Fermoy 0-12

Buttevant put in an impressive performance to overcome Fermoy in the Avondhu Junior A Football 1/4 Final and will meet Kilshannig in a semi-final.

Buttevant began quite jittery as Fermoy made several direct runs in a row in the opening minutes and registered some early damage, surging into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead. It was the most experienced player in perhaps all of North Cork who brought us into the game, the one and only J.D Murphy. He intercepted and fielded two opposition kickouts in a row and set up rapid attacks that led to successive points from the impressive Denis O'Connell and Kevin O'Keefe in the tenth minute. From here, Buttevant took control of the scoreboard, 0-4 to 0-3, and in truth never looked in danger of relinquishing the lead.

In the twelfth minute, Kevin O'Keefe maintained the pressure on Fermoy when he sent a shot billowing into the net, Buttevant 1-04 to 0-3.

Buttevant tacked on several points, taking advantage of the vast space in front of the Fermoy goals with some great kick passing and some terrific direct running, Seamus Madigan, Kevin Lenahan and John O'Neill all adding points running up the scoreboard. A couple of super saves by the Fermoy goalie kept them in the balance, but when Kevin O'Keefe reacted quickest to a rebound and buried the ball once more, the lead jumped to nine points, 2-8 to 0-5.

The sides traded a point before half time, heading into the break at 2-9 to 0-6.

Fermoy started the second half the strongest, in the face of a big deficit they came out swinging. They landed several blows in a row, so that in the 49th minute they had closed the gap to five points, 2-11 to 0-12. Our big ball-winning midfielders, Anthony O'Neill and Tadgh Healy gained the edge in the fielding stakes, and some great support running from Jack O'Riordan and Tadgh O'Sullivan set us back on our way. Some inspirational defending by our captain and leader Micheal Broe, as well as dogged harrying by James O'Keefe, gave us momentum building turnover after turnover, and some great sniping up front by Denny and John O'Neill helped us run out winners by a margin of nine points in the end.

Credit due to Fermoy who put up a physical resistance after falling behind to the well-taken goals, and battled hard right up until the dying seconds. But this Buttevant side proved that they are far from finished their 2017 campaign. Onwards to the Semi-Final we go!

Also, next week, we resume our Juniot Hurling campaign with the 1/4 final vs Ballygiblin, Friday 28th July @7.45 in Doneraile.
