Hurlers victorious over CastletownRoche   08/05/2017

Castletownroche 1 - 12 Buttevant 2 - 18

Buttevant's hurlers resumed their Division 2 League campaign with a win over Castletownroche on Saturday evening in front of a good crowd at Castletownroche.

The team made a flying start, Kevin O'Keefe setting the tone for the evening with some sharp free-taking and a point from play, giving us a lead of 0-4 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. With J.D Murphy sweeping up any loose balls in the backline, we controlled the aerial battles and sent a constant supply of ball into our forwards who managed a decent return. We powered through the rest of the half, going in at the break ahead by 0-12 to 0-4.

On the resumption, Castletownroche were clearly stung by the halftime deficit, and within a few moments they had goaled, a long delivery being scrambled home by their full forward. Buttevant showed a lot of indiscipline, conceding unnecessary frees well within scoring range, so that Castletown cut the lead to just two points in the 48th minute, Buttevant 0-15 Castletownroche 1-10.

Kevin O'Keefe came to the fore again though. In the 49th minute, he grabbed a ball on the 13 and turned and buried it, widening the gap to five points, 1-15 to 1-10. A few minutes later, substitute Ryan Fowley found the net, providing us with a comfortable edge once more, 2-16 to 1-10.

The sides traded two points apiece, and Buttevant ran out winners 2-18 to 1-10.

It was great to see fella's enjoying the hurling and working hard, but there is still a lot of work to be done before we take on Kilshannig in the championshiop on the weekend of the 28th. With sessions coming thick and fast, every player will be trying to raise their game. With almost thirty players togged against Castletown, there is undoubtedly great interest in playing, and competition for places is fierce, possibly higher than it's been in the last few years! Encouraging signs no doubt. The work continues.

Buttevant abú!
