Buttevant victorious in Championship First Round   29/04/2017

Buttevant junior footballers made a fantastic beginning to the Avondhu Junior A Football Championship, storming past old rivals Ballyclough on a scoreline of 5-7 to 0-8 in Doneraile. There's an old saying that goals win games, and by God, did Buttevant prove that tonight.

Buttevant began with the wind at their backs, but the opening minutes were a little jittery, a few handling errors and turnovers leading to Ballyclough to grab the opening point, coming from the boot of their marquee forward Colm O'Neill.

Buttevant settled quickly though, and inside in the full forward line Ryan Fowley wreaked havoc, breaking free from his man time and time again and the supply of ball to him from the O'Neill's in midfield and the half-forward line was exquisite. He latched onto a pass in the ninth minute, and lobbed the Ballyclough goalkeeper with a somewhat flukey effort. Buttevant 1-0 Ballyclough 0-1.

In the fourteenth minute, we struck again. Sean Flynn, somewhat disorientated after finding himself inside the opposition 21, collected a rebounded shot and slotted it home himself. Buttevant 2-0, Ballyclough 0-2.

Our halfback line were well on top as the half progressed, Broe, Jones and Flynn all quenching Ballyclough's attacks and then rampaging forward with the ball. Denis O'Connell and JD played huge roles in packing out the defence and supporting their back line, then breaking down the field.

If you thought Sean Flynn finding the net was bizarre, then the sweet point that Brendan Jones booted over the bar had many in attendance wondering if what they were seeing was real. Marvelous stuff from the wing backs, but we would have to encourage the two lads to play the lotto this weekend and definitely play the bingo on Monday night, worth €4,300.

With 23 minutes gone, Kevin Lenahen joined the goal scorers ranks, burying a shot into the Ballyclogh net. Buttevant added a point, and closed out the half holding Ballyclough at bay, so that when the whistle blew Buttevant were in the lead, 3-3 to 0-2.

On the changeover, Buttevant faced into the breeze and began with confidence, with points coming at crucial stages from Seamus Madigan and John O'Neill. In the 43rd minute, Buttevant found the net again, pretty much ending the match as a contest. After a goalmouth scramble, John O'Neill claimed the rebound and sent the ball past the goalie, Buttevant 4-5 Ballyclough 0-5.

There were excellent performances all over the pitch, Ronan Donovan making two vital saves, the full backline of Tadgh, John and young Jack Riordan marshaled their men with the usual tenacity. In the final ten minutes, Ballyclough had several half-opportunities for goals, but these were snuffed out time and time again. Ryan Fowley goaled for a second time, giving Buttevant a lead of 5-5 to 0-5.

Closing out the game, Broe and Buckley in particular making some surging runs out of defence, breaking Ballyclough momentum and allowing our forwards to keep the scoreboard ticking with some well-taken points. The subs who came on made huge impacts, Jamie Whelan making his debut, Kevin Crowley charging into the fray, Seanie Madigan kicking one great point and one horrendous wide. Both JD Murphy and Adrian Noonan went back on after coming off, what a shift by those lads.

The game finished and Buttevant were met with great affection from our fantastic supporters, but you can be sure that this group are not getting ahead of themselves. This was a first round match, not a final, and already the talk has turned to when is the next training session? Feet are firmly planted on the ground, we are under no illusions of where we stand. Our footballing adventure for 2017 continues.
