Buttevant defeat in first hurling league match   18/04/2017

Division 2 Hurling Lague Buttevant 2-12 Mallow 3-16

Buttevant junior hurlers got their 2017 league campaign underway on Easter Sunday morn and fell to defeat against Mallow. The game started even enough, both sides registering points in the opening five minutes. The problems arose when Mallow went on a goal-scoring spree, finding the net three times in a nine minute span, which put them firmly into the driving seat and stunning the Buttevant team. Fifteen minutes gone, Buttevant 0-3 Mallow 3-3.

For the bulk of the team, it was their first time seeing hurling action since our exit from the championship last summer, a truth was painstakingly obvious from the rustiness across the field. However, there was a noticeable improvement in touch and handling even in the first quarter to the second quarter. Unfortunately, the three goal blitz had done irreversible damage.

Kevin O'Keefe goaled from a free, bouncing the ball and burying it past the stacked Mallow goalline, and his frees kept the scoreboard ticking over. However our backs were under severe pressure, and despite some good individual performances the amount of ball they were exposed to ensured Mallow kept control of the fixture. At half time we trailed by seven points.

Half time, Buttevant 1-6 Mallow 3-7

On the resumption of the game, we came flying out of the blocks, Darren Healy grabbing a goal in the 33rd minute reducing to deficit to just four points, Buttevant 2-6 Mallow 3-7.

We took control of the early exchanges, and to be honest we had Mallow on the backfoot, winning 50/50 balls and really coming into our own. An unfortunate head injury to Darragh O Driscoll led to a long stoppage in play, which broke the momentum of the match and allowed Mallow a few moments to catch their breath. Darragh is thankfully ok , just a bit of a knock. Mallow seized the opportunity to reorganise and began notching scores once more, and whilst we were battling hard, the deficit was stretched. We cut it to 6 points in the 50th minute, Buttevant 2-9 Mallow 3-12, but that was as close as it got over the final few minutes.

A tough defeat for the lads, but 2-12 was good scoring for the first outing of the year. Plenty of positives to be taken, but a lot of work to be done.

Attention turns to the footballers who are preparing for their championship encounter with Ballyclough. Buttevant abú!
